Masala Jowar Roti

A nutritious, gluten-free flatbread made from jowar (sorghum) flour, infused with aromatic spices and herbs. Perfect for a wholesome meal!

Ingredients:

  • Jowar (sorghum) flour – 1 cup

  • Onion – 1 small, finely chopped

  • Green chili – 1, finely chopped (adjust to taste)

  • Fresh coriander leaves – 2 tablespoons, finely chopped

  • Cumin seeds – ½ teaspoon

  • Salt – to taste

  • Warm water – as needed to form a dough

  • Ghee or oil – for cooking

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:

    • In a mixing bowl, combine jowar flour, chopped onion, green chili, coriander leaves, cumin seeds, and salt.

    • Gradually add warm water and mix to form a soft, pliable dough. Knead well.

  2. Shape the Rotis:

    • Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each into a ball.

    • Place a dough ball between two sheets of parchment paper or plastic wrap.

    • Gently roll out into a thin, round roti. If the dough sticks, dust lightly with jowar flour.

  3. Cook the Rotis:

    • Heat a tawa or flat skillet over medium heat.

    • Carefully place the rolled roti onto the hot tawa.

    • Cook for about 1–2 minutes on one side until light brown spots appear.

    • Flip and cook the other side, applying a little ghee or oil if desired.

    • Press gently with a spatula to ensure even cooking.

  4. Serve:

    • Serve hot with your choice of chutney, yogurt, or curry.

Tips:

  • Rolling Technique: Using parchment paper helps in rolling out the rotis without sticking.

  • Variations: You can add grated vegetables like carrot or beetroot to the dough for added nutrition and flavor.

  • Serving Suggestion: Pairs well with spicy pickles or a dollop of butter for enhanced taste.
